The Big Story
As geopolitical tensions continue to grow amid the Ukraine-Russia conflict, one artist is trying to bring the world together in his own way.
He's creating an NFT assortment consisting of precisely 7,907,414,597 NFTs, one for every human being on the planet.
Dubbed CryptoGreyman, this massive undertaking is created by Dutch artist Daniel Rozenberg (aka Dadara) and NFT digital rights management platform RAIRtech, which provides immutable blockchain identity. While the entire collection looks identical, each NFT has its own serial number, which gives its unique name and identity.
It's a social experiment…
Dadara says that the collection, which depicts a series of stereotypical grumpy-looking men with a suitcase, is a representation of how corporate businesses and public institutions in today's world perceive each individual. For them, every person is just a number—a key feature highlighted in these NFTs.
"I see this as a dead-serious prank, which can rattle the cage of consensual reality and elevate the conversation. It’s an experiment with an unpredictable outcome. No one specific NFT is better than another, and because the minting price is widely accessible it will be interesting to see what value each individual CryptoGreyman holder brings,” he said.
The collection was released on February 22 via Polygon's Layer 2 solution, with each item costing one MATIC, or around $1.5. Dadara hopes that his venture will encourage the Web3 community to develop projects that honestly focus on individuality and not rely on the crypto hype.
…but it's not just that!
While the collection may seem like a statement piece, it's more than that. Dadara and RAIRtech have partnered with a non-profit organization Movement on the Ground to disperse the proceeds from the project to refugees. To do this effectively, RAIRtech has also placed 2,222 of the most coveted numbered NFTs in a treasury. The funds will be used to teach refugees how to set up a wallet and sell their NFTs, enabling them to start their new lives anywhere they travel.
To conclude, NFTs are everywhere: from 3D avatars to full-body collectibles to even offering access to an event or coupon, they’ve become massively popular as brands strive to establish meaningful relationships with their customers. Their ability to provide rare, unique and exclusive ownership of digital assets has made them appealing to millions who sought new investment avenues amid the pandemic. Moreover, the rising popularity of crypto has fuelled demand for NFTs, reaching an all-time high of around $7 billion in January.
That being said, whether or not CryptoGreyman succeeds in its mission depends on how the crypto community embraces the ambitious project. While it has garnered some positive feedback from early adopters, it’s still early to tell. Regardless, it does bring up some interesting issues surrounding NFTs' core functionalities that the Web3 community needs to address.
